Located on the VCU Health Systems Campus, the Robert Blackwell Smith Building, built in 1980, provides administrative and academic facilities for the School of Pharmacy, including research and teaching laboratories, classrooms, and office spaces.
The project consisted of the renovation of a 3,600 S.F. space on the 5th floor. Design work included mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for a compounding lab and ante room to provide a clean room environment compliant with USP 797 to be used for teaching School of Pharmacy students compounding procedures. Design also included an instructional lab, office and storage room support spaces.
Plumbing design included the demolition of existing wet lab waste and vent and supply piping, the installation of a multi-station scrub sink, a tempered water emergency facewash and the utility support for the new mechanical air handling system.
Mechanical design included the addition of a new air handling unit to provide 20 to 30 air changes as required by USP 797. HEPA filtration and space pressurization control were designed to provide the clean room environment. The installation of new rooftop equipment was coordinated with the extensive amount of existing rooftop equipment and piping was routed in existing shafts through several floors.
Electrical design included power for lab and HVAC equipment, as well as cleanroom compatible LED lighting. Lighting design included performing photometric analyses to ensure sufficient light levels during normal and emergency operation.
